Rats in North West England

Common in older North West housing, drains and commercial waste areas.

Rats — close-up identification photograph

Brown rats are the species found in almost every rat call we attend across Merseyside, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Lancashire. They are neophobic — wary of new objects — which is one reason casual DIY attempts so often stall. They need food, water and shelter, and a surprising number of North West properties supply all three through defective drains, bin storage and overgrown boundaries.

Signs of rats

  • Droppings around 15–20mm long, tapered at the ends
  • Scratching and scurrying in lofts, cavities or under floors at night
  • Gnaw marks on packaging, cable, pipework and timber
  • Greasy smear marks along regular runs
  • Burrows near sheds, decking, embankments and compost

Health risks

  • Rats can carry organisms associated with human illness, including leptospirosis
  • Urine and droppings contaminate food storage and preparation areas
  • Contamination risk in commercial food premises can trigger enforcement action

Property damage

  • Gnawed electrical cabling, a recognised fire risk
  • Damaged insulation, plasterboard and stored goods
  • Water damage where pipework or waste plumbing is gnawed

What you can do yourself

  • Shop products are often placed where rats never travel
  • The underlying cause — usually a drainage defect or an open entry point — goes unfixed
  • Poorly placed bait creates a risk to children, pets and wildlife

When to call a professional

  • A full internal and external survey to establish how rats are getting in
  • Control measures placed securely and appropriately for the property
  • Proofing recommendations so the entry route is closed, not just the current rats removed
  • Planned follow-up visits to confirm activity has stopped

Prevention tips

  • Keep bin lids closed and bin areas clear of spilled waste
  • Repair damaged air bricks, gaps around pipework and defective drain covers
  • Cut back dense vegetation against walls and outbuildings
  • Avoid leaving pet food or bird feed accessible overnight
